Dramatic events in the spring of 1823, force Miss Maria Dinchope to leave her position at Linmore Hall, in circumstances which change her social status. Living as a maiden lady of indeterminate age, cushioned against poverty in retirement, she determines to contact her late mother’s brother and seek another who can answer a significant question.

Meticulous in her planning, Maria writes a carefully scripted letter of introduction to the gentleman, amending her working past, and received a civil invitation in response. Then, armed with a fervent hope of success and a few precious family mementoes, she set off to meet the owner of Winterton Hall where her mother, Helen Corndon, nee Morville, was born.

Not only does Mr George Morville accept Maria’s claim to kinship in his sister’s name, he also enlists her help to restore order to his sadly neglected home; but there is no such welcome from the warring factions in the extended family. Those with a vested interest in the ancestral estate view her with suspicion and any mention of the brother with whom she has lost contact, as a threat. Amongst which is a titled gentleman that hints at a prior acquaintance, and a hawk-eyed lady in black, met in different circumstances who challenges Maria’s presence in the landed gentry, and sets her a dilemma.
